Helping Hands: Disability Travel in Bali
Ketut Sama and Made Nano have set up Helping Hands Bali, a holiday care service based in Bali's art and cultural capital, Ubud. These two enterprising Balinese family men have established a business designed to make Bali travel easier for the disabled and the elderly, while leaving their carers free to enjoy some well-earned respite on the island.
Mission
The mission statement for Helping Hands Bali is: "Disability is no handicap for holidays in Ubud, Bali".
Both Nano and Ketut are happy providing a service that allows disabled people to have a holiday in Bali while giving their families some respite. They stress that disability and financial restraints should be no barrier to enjoying the beauty and rich culture of one of the world's favorite holiday destinations.
The holiday service works with people with physical and mental disabilities and the frail elderly, has access to 24-hour medical assistance, 24-hour full care if required, and a wheelchair access directory of hotels, restaurants and places of interest.
Cost
Helping Hands Bali is really about caring for other people and sharing Bali with them, and the costs really depend on the level of disability, as services start from RP150,000 for one-on-one care for a minimum of three hours, with negotiable day rates for 24 hour in-hotel care and outings.
An airport transfer to Ubud, with a driver and carer, costs RP320,000, and includes getting the guest settled in the hotel and orientated.
The cost also depends on how financially able people are — for those who can afford it, there are standard rates, but for those who cannot Helping Hands Bali is very flexible.
